Embrace

I never called myself anything but the name given by my parents. I was never interested in the labels of boxes marked by a society so willing to embrace me as disabled. I never wanted to be someone else’s cause or charity or good deed for the day. So I accept love where I find it. It is, after all, the most indescribable thing ever and who am I — who is anyone? — to judge anything. The visual, I’m sure, is great, but it’s also very distracting. What serves as a constant stimulus is also a constant distraction. I’m not distracted by anything other than my own truth, whatever that means. I’m still figuring it out.

  • You say grace before meals. All right.
But I say grace before the concert and the opera,
and grace before the play and pantomine,
and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching,
painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing
and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.

  • Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy - because we will always want to have something else or something more. - Brother David Steindl-Rast1 year ago
